Biogen Idec acquired Syntonix Pharmaceuticals in 2007, forming Biogen Idec's hemophilia therapeutic area around Syntonix's Fc fusion technology platform. While Fc fusion technology has been used for many years in approved products such as Enbrel^®, Amevive^® and Orencia^®, Syntonix's proprietary monomeric Fc fusion technology has the potential to deliver enhanced pharmacodynamic properties when applied to recombinant coagulation factors. Operating as a wholly-owned subsidiary, Biogen Idec's hemophilia therapeutic area leverages the capabilities and global reach of Biogen Idec to translate the great promise of this technology into substantial improvements in treatment options and quality of life for the hemophilia community.
