Biogen Idec is committed to developing innovative treatments for patients with high unmet medical needs. For 30 years, we have been focused on transforming scientific discoveries into advances in human healthcare through the discovery, development and commercialization of our own pioneering products and through strategic alliances. Our hemophilia therapeutic area is focused on the discovery and development of innovative, long-acting therapies to treat hemophilia.

About Clinical Trials

A clinical trial is a research study conducted to answer specific questions about new treatments, or to investigate new ways of using known treatments. In most cases, the therapies and drugs investigated in clinical trials are not approved by Regulatory Agencies (such as the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the United States), and the benefits and risks of taking the treatment are not yet confirmed. Clinical trials are used to determine whether new treatments are safe and effective. The knowledge gained from clinical trials regarding the safety and efficacy of new treatments or drugs ultimately may allow pharmaceutical companies to offer new and better options to patients.

Biogen Idec's clinical programs in hemophilia

With the goal of providing people living with hemophilia and their caregivers with access to information about clinical trials, we have created a library of resources and information about hemophilia as well as information about investigational treatment possibilities that may be available to people with hemophilia through Biogen Idec-sponsored clinical trials.

rFIXFc Clinical Program

Phase II/III Study of Recombinant Factor IX Fc Fusion Protein (rFIXFc) in People With Hemophilia B

Phase II/III Clinical Trial Title

B-LONG: An Open-Label, Multicenter Evaluation of the Safety, Pharmacokinetics, and Efficacy of Recombinant, Long-acting Coagulation Factor IX Fc Fusion (rFIXFc) in the Prevention and Treatment of Bleeding in Previously Treated People With Hemophilia B

Phase II/III Clinical Trial Purpose

Partners Biogen Idec and Biovitrum AB (publ) are developing innovative, fully recombinant clotting factor replacement products that are being explored for their potential to provide prolonged protection from bleeding.
  • These investigational products are fusions of the Fc component of human IgG and a clotting factor
  • rFIXFc, the lead compound in the portfolio, is being evaluated in clinical trials for patients with hemophilia B
  • This study is to investigate the safety, pharmacokinetics, and efficacy (activity and length of effect) of rFIXFc in the prevention and treatment of bleeding in previously-treated people with hemophilia B

rFVIIIFc Clinical Program

Phase I/IIa Study of Recombinant Factor VIII Fc Fusion Protein (rFVIIIFc) in People With Severe Hemophilia A

Phase I/IIa Clinical Trial Title

An Open-Label, Crossover, Dose-Escalation, and Multi-Center Study to Determine the Safety, Tolerability, and Pharmacokinetics of a Single Intravenous Injection of rFVIIIFc in Previously Treated People With Severe Hemophilia A

Phase I/IIa Clinical Trial Purpose
